WHAT IS THE SCIC?

The SCIC is the oldest and largest interfaith council in Southern California. In 1953 the council was first established as an ecumenical council – meaning that it was an organization comprised of only churches representing the various denominations of the Christian faith. But in 2004, with a historical vote made by the community, the council changed from ecumenical one to an interfaith council. The SCIC now has an association of more than 140 faith communities and organizations, encompassing over 35 cities and serving approximately 1.8 million people.

60TH ANNIVERSARY GALA DINNER
Responsibilities:  Help in the organizing of the gala by attending the committee meetings; help in the publicity; solicit Silent Auction items; seek sponsorships.
35th FESTIVAL OF MUSIC BENEFIT CONCERT
Responsibilities:  Help in the organizing of the concert by finding and contacting diverse musicians and choirs; help find a venue; help in publicity; help with on-site logistics; attend committee meetings.
INTERFAITH UNITY BIKE-A-THON
Responsibilities:  Help with registration process; publicity; encourage individuals to participate; attend committee meetings; help with on-site logistics. 
WEEK OF INTERFAITH PRAYER UNDERSTANDING
Responsibilities: Find and contact individuals from diverse faith traditions to participate; help in finding a venue; assist in publicity; participate in the committee meetings.
MARTIN LUTHER KINF JR. INTERFAITH CELEBRATION
Responsibilities:  Help in the organizing of the concert by finding and contacting diverse musicians and choirs; help find a venue; identify a keynote speaker; help in publicity; help with on-site logistics; attend committee meetings.
HEART TO HEART: CONNECTING TO THE DIVINE COMMITTEE
Responsibilities: Heart to Heart: Connecting to the Divine program of the South Coast Interfaith Council (SCIC) is an opportunity for members of the interfaith community to come and observe and/or partake in the worship service of another faith community outside of one’s own. Anyone from the interfaith community is welcome to come and be a part of the worship service.  The committee members will be in charge of helping organize and coordinate the program.
RELIGION 101 COMMITTEE
Through the SCIC Religion 101 series, the historical origins, central teachings, and devotional practices of the major religious traditions Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Catholicism, Mormonism, Zorostrian, Islam, Baha’i and Sikhism are considered in relation to common themes of human experience: the holy or sacred, evil and suffering, goodness and joy, love, compassion, and wisdom.
COMMUNITY SERVICE COMMITTEE
Responsibilities:  Every year the SCIC participates in Interfaith Build Day with Habitat for Humanity, Feeding the Homeless and Beach Clean-up Days.  The committee members will assist in organizing the dates and coordinating the days of service with the interfaith community.  
CONSTITUTION & BY LAW COMMITTEE
Responsibilities:  Assist in the revision of the SCIC Constitution & Bylaws; attend the committee meetings; assist with following up with state/ government agencies.
VISITING FAITH COMMUNITIES COMMITTEE
Responsibilities:  Assist Milia Islam-Majeed in visiting various faith communities to express appreciation for their support as well as encourage continued support of the work of the council.
SCIC SPEAKERS BUREAU 
The Interfaith Speakers Bureau is an initiative by SCIC to expand its outreach efforts to promote religious literacy and mutual respect and understanding. The program furthers the practice of religious pluralism and mutual respect by modeling civil dialogues with diverse faith communities in the South Bay area. Responsibilities:  Identify speakers; help in program development; help in publicity.
SCIC YOUTH COMMITTEE
One of the main objectives of the Youth Committee is to encourage the involvement of the youth in interfaith work and initiatives.  This is one of our most important committees.
SCIC SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMITTEE
The Social Concerns Committee of the South Coast Interfaith Council organizes forums, holds public meetings, analyses issues and plans advocacy related its Priority Goals. The committee also advises the SCIC’s Board of Directors about social issues and works with a variety of organizations, committees and groups. The committee meets on the second Monday of each month (except July and December) at 7:00 PM at locations made available by one or another faith community affiliated with the SCIC.
SCIC INTERFAITH RELATIONS COMMITTEE
The primary responsibility of this committee is to organize the Interfaith Cafes. Interfaith Cafes are small group discussions for laity and youth (9th-12th grade) and religious leaders about how their faith impacts their daily lives and how their faith makes it possible to relate to and appreciate those from other faith traditions. Each session will have the same format, with different participants. You may come to any or all of them.
REVENUE ENHANCEMENT COMMITTEE
The goal of this committee is to brainstorm and implement ideas that will help generate additional funding for the SCIC. Responsibilities:  Attend a meeting once a month and actively participate on brainstorming and implementing ideas into action.
